Open Positions

A PhD position is available in the group of Plant Metabolism in the Department of Botany, at the University of Innsbruck, in collaboration with Oroboros Instruments, funded by The Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG).

Overview:

Algae currently have a niche role in green industries, but have potential to provide much more. To do so, we need to understand photosynthesis and metabolism better. This project will advance our understanding of which regulatory processes of photosynthesis are required under various growth conditions, and the influence they have on metabolism. The model green alga, Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, will be used to enable access to mutants available for testing the relevance of processes revealed to be important.

Methods:

A full characterisation of photosynthesis and respiration will be supported by the involvement of Oroboros Instruments. This company has an excellent reputation for producing high-end instrumentation for characterisation of mitochondrial energetics, and are moving into the field of photosynthesis. An applied aspect of the project focuses on how best to couple of non-destructive measurements of photosynthesis. Full training will be provided.

The PhD student will also learn to use liquid and gas chromatography, coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS / LC-MS), for targeted metabolite analyses. Algal cultures will be grown in precisely regulated bioreactors, enabling repetitious growth conditions.

Requirements:

  • An interest in research that tackles fundamental scientific questions
  • Reliable, organised and able to work accurately
  • Motivation to learn analytical techniques and develop scientific skills
  • Keen to complete a PhD, according to university guidelines
  • An MSc in a related discipline
  • A good level of English for working in an international research group
  • Competence in basic computing skills and statistics
  • Experience with writing scientific publications is desirable

The position:

The student will be enrolled at the University of Innsbruck for three years. A monthly gross salary of €2,237 is provided by the FFG. The project coordinator and PhD supervisor is Thomas Roach.

Application:

Please send your letter of motivation with potential start date (from 01.02.22), and your CV, including two relevant contacts that can provide a reference, as a single pdf file, to thomas.roach@uibk.ac.at Please don’t hesitate to contact me on the same email address with any questions.

Ensuring the excellent quality of our daily work in the Oroboros O2k-Laboratory your tasks contain:

  • Respirometry measurements with various biological samples as well as measurements of further mitochondrial parameters (ROS production, mt-membrane potential, ATP production, Ca2+, CoQ and NAD(P)H redox states, photobiology) by high-resolution respirometry in combination with fluorescence and redox measurements.
  • Analytical measurements on biological samples: Cell count, protein content, spectrophotometric determination of enzyme activities
  • Application, evaluation and development of protocols in our on-going research projects
  • Cell culture and sample preparation, production of buffers, chemicals and media.
  • Quality Control of the O2k-FluoRespirometer and NextGen-O2k
  • Administrative tasks in the laboratory
  • Blood draws (if qualified for that)

Your skills:

  • Completed training as a biomedical assistant (including phlebotomy) – equivalent to Austrian Biomedizinische_r Assistent_In (preferred) or alternatively completed a university degree in biological sciences with lab experience
  • Proficiency in English
  • Proactive approach
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Attention to detail and careful working method
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Teamwork
  • Flexibility

We offer:

A 38.5 hours/week position with a diverse area of responsibility allowing for professional development and growth. The successful candidate will be joining an engaged and friendly team accompanied by a competitive performance-based salary (based on the collective agreement for Angestellte und Lehrlinge in Handelsbetrieben with additional pay according to qualifications, minimum salary EUR 32 200.- gross/year).

To apply: Please send your application including a motivation letter, CV and two reference letters to verena.laner@oroboros.at

In the heart of Innsbruck is the Oroboros O2k-Laboratory with the newest O2k-MultiSensor Modules and the NextGen-O2k configuration available for mitochondrial and algal research, providing the basis of high-output in high-resolution PhotoRespirometry. This could be your new place of work as an Oroboros Postdoc specializing in mitochondrial and chloroplast bioenergetics, where you would join a scientifically oriented team. Innovations, reliability, and customer relations (scientist to scientist communication) are our top priorities.

Questions to ask yourself before applying:

  1. Is scientific and personal integrity of upmost importance to you?
  2. Do you feel confident preparing scientific manuscripts for peer-review and publication?
  3. Could you clearly explain what high-resolution respirometry and photosynthesis are to your neighbor?
  4. Do you have experience in collaborating with other scientists in large projects?
  5. Do the phrases “pays attention to detail” and “very organized” describe your working method?

If any of your answers were “no,” please consider a job with one of our competitors.

If you have answered yes to these questions, please consider a position with us where your key responsibilities would be:

  • Scientific project on mitochondrial physiology and PhotoBiology, including collaborations and publications.
  • Participation in research and development of our products, including the NextGen-O2k and other innovations.
  • Support and training of customers.
